About Us
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 144,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society. ASCE's vision is to position engineers as global leaders, building a better quality of life. The Central PA Section of ASCE has nearly 800 members and represents engineering and construction interests for communities throughout western Pennsylvania.
The four sections of ASCE Pennsylvania-Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Central Pennsylvania and Lehigh Valley-represent more than 6,000 civil engineers statewide.
Back in 2006, the four Pennsylvania sections of ASCE came together to create the first 2010 Report Card for Pennsylvania's Infrastructure, assessing things like our drinking water systems, roads, and bridges at the state level and sounding the alarm about our state's neglect of infrastructure funding and its long-term effects. Please contact our President for more information.
Our Mission
Providing essential value to our members, their careers, our partners, and the public by developing leadership, advancing technology, advocating lifelong learning, and promoting the profession.
Student Chapters
There are three student chapters located within the Central PA Section. They include Bucknell University, Penn State University - Harrisburg Campus and Penn State University - Main Campus. The objective of the ASCE Student Chapters is to help prepare themselves for entry into the Civil Engineering profession and society. Student Chapters of ASCE help civil engineering students begin professional contacts and associations, which continued through life, are so valuable to the practicing engineer in serving mankind and the engineering profession more effectively.
The chapter is a good medium for exercising principles of personal and public relations. For example, chapter members prepare reports to the Society, present and discuss papers, conduct chapter activities, hold office, request and entertain guest speakers and visit engineering works under construction. These activities contribute to broad personal development by stimulating an early professional consciousness while the student is still preoccupied with techniques.
